The staff of National Medical Stores (NMS) joined hundreds of others who had turned up at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the inaugural National Day of Physical Activity, held on Sunday 08/07/18. Spearheaded by NMS’ mother ministry, the Ministry of Health, the National Day of Physical Activity is to be an annual event, happening every second Sunday of July. And the main aim of the day is to galvanise Ugandans to adopt a healthy lifestyle; one that specifically involves regular exercise.

Regular exercise is one of the actions that shall help Ugandans fight an emerging threat to their health, Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). NCDs are those that do not arise from infectious agents and cannot be spread from person to person, but are mostly genetic disorders and/or lifestyle related. They include illnesses/ailments like hypertension, diabetes, obesity and cancer. And according to the Health Ministry, up to 40% of the deaths in Uganda today are brought on by NCDs.

The call to action was led by His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni. While addressing those gathered, he stressed that much as communicable diseases have been largely tackled through Government programmes like immunisation, the next step was for Ugandans to adopt behaviour that shall keep NCDs at bay, including watching what they eat, avoiding dangerous habits like smoking, screening where necessary and, of course, exercising.
All the above measures are in line with NMS’ 10 Preventive Points, as we continue to preach the ‘Gospel of St. Prevention’. Regular exercise is a fantastic way to keep the body ticking, so to speak. No wonder, then, that the NMS staff also joined the President on a 10-km walk around Kampala to help spread the gospel of good living.

And besides the walk there was a lot more activity on the grounds, with the staff taking part in the physical drills and dances, and listening to the raft of experts on hand to advise all on what to do to be at their best both mentally and physically.
It was a day of fun as the cause of good health was celebrated. And you can be sure that NMS shall continue to be a part of it.
