On 22nd May 2026, staff at the National Medical Stores (NMS) gathered for one-hour informative Hepatitis B awareness campaign session aimed at sensitizing staff about the risks, prevention and importance of vaccination against Hepatitis B. The session was led by Dr. Shiba Akamboneza from UMC Victoria Hospital.
During the session, Dr. Shiba explained that Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus and can spread through contact with infected blood and body fluids. She emphasized that if left untreated, the disease can lead to severe liver complications such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Staff were encouraged to remain vigilant and practice preventive measures such as safe handling of sharp objects, avoiding sharing personal items and seeking regular medical checkups.
A major highlight of the session was the importance of Hepatitis B vaccination as the most effective way of preventing the disease. Dr. Shiba strongly encouraged staff to complete the recommended three-dose vaccination schedule, emphasizing that full protection is only achieved after receiving all three doses at the recommended intervals. She further reminded staff that missing or delaying doses reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine and urged everyone to prioritize completing the vaccination process for their long-term health and safety.
The campaign served as an important reminder of the value of health awareness and preventive healthcare within the workplace.
